Today, Governor Rauner signed into law SB 1933 that will establish an interagency program between the State Board of Elections and the Office of the Secretary of State. Applying for a driver’s license will serve as an application to register to vote. There are some limitations regarding temporary driver’s licenses and ID cards, but this is a victory for our democracy. Additionally, the governor signed the Illinois Trust Act, which will prohibit state and local police from giving immigration agents access to any individuals or transferring them into an agent’s custody. It prohibits sharing of information, such as electronic databases (that are not available to the public), for the use of investigating or enforcing immigration operations.
