SUMMARY:Is It for You? Exploring the Benefits and Challenges of Ranked Choice Voting in the US
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 8th\, at 7 pm\, for our monthly Ideas Forum\, Is it for You? Exploring the Benefits and Challenges of Ranked Choice Voting in the US.\n\n\n \n\n\nCanvassers are currently collecting signatures to gather support for a binding referendum on the Naperville April 2025 ballot\, asking voters if they want to use ranked choice voting to elect the city’s mayor and council. Ranked Choice Voting is an alternative electoral system that allows voters to rank candidates by preference. \n\n\n \n\n\nDr. Chod of North Central College will lead a discussion highlighting the advantages and complexities of adopting ranked choice voting (RCV) in the U.S. electoral system. Topics covered include how RCV can increase voter representation\, promote consensus\, and decrease voters’ “wasted vote” approach. The discussion will also address the logistical hurdles\, voter confusion\, and structural changes required for successful RCV implementation. Ultimately\, the talk is designed for attendees to answer the question: Is RCV for you?\n\n\n \n\n\nOur presenter\, Suzanne Chod\, received her B.S. in Political Science from Bowling Green State University in 2002 and her PhD in the same field from Michigan State University in 2007. Dr. Chod joined the NCC faculty as an Assistant Professor in 2010. She teaches classes in American political institutions\, parties\, campaigns\, and elections and courses focused on women in American politics and research methods. She is currently the Coordinator of the Gender and Sexuality Studies Program and a member of the President’s Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion Task Force.\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThis event is free\, but please register here.\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Tuesday Book Club - Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness\, Medicine and the Murder of a President
DESCRIPTION:by Candice Millard \nRegister for our April Book Club meeting! \nFrom Goodreads: \nJames A. Garfield was one of the most extraordinary men ever elected president. Born into abject poverty\, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar\, a Civil War hero\, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will\, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration\, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. \nBut the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil. The unhinged assassin’s half-delivered strike shattered the fragile national mood of a country so recently fractured by civil war\, and left the wounded president as the object of a bitter behind-the-scenes struggle for power—over his administration\, over the nation’s future\, and\, hauntingly\, over his medical care. A team of physicians administered shockingly archaic treatments\, to disastrous effect. As his condition worsened\, Garfield received help: Alexander Graham Bell\, the inventor of the telephone\, worked around the clock to invent a new device capable of finding the bullet. \nMeticulously researched\, epic in scope\, and pulsating with an intimate human focus and high-velocity narrative drive\, The Destiny of the Republic will stand alongside The Devil in the White City and The Professor and the Madman as a classic of narrative history.

SUMMARY:Misinformation and Disinformation - Threats to Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our April Ideas Forum! \nThe proliferation of misinformation and disinformation has emerged as a significant threat to our democratic processes and informed decision-making of the electorate. \nWe make important decisions based on what we hear on social media and in the news. When we are unable to distinguish between truth and mis/disinformation\, it can cause confusion and misunderstandings\, leaving a generalized sense that “you can’t believe anything anymore.” \nMis/disinformation ultimately undermines trust in legitimate information sources\, increases polarization in our society\, and leads to misinformed decisions. Learn: \n\nThe difference between misinformation and disinformation\nHow to spot it\nWhat you can do about it\n\nThis event is free\, but please register. \nOur presenter is Barb Laimins\, a former public school civics teacher and civic mentor liaison to social studies teachers in Illinois for the McCormick Foundation. She currently serves on the Illinois General Assembly Rank Choice Voting Task Force\, the planning team for the LWV/National Institute for Civic Discourse\, and co-chair of the LWVIL Mis/Disinformation Task Force. \n

SUMMARY:Tuesday Book Club - A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan's Plot to Take Over America\, and the Woman Who Stopped Them
DESCRIPTION:by Timothy Eagan \nRegister for our January Book Club meeting! \nFrom Goodreads: \nA historical thriller by the Pulitzer and National Book Award-winning author that tells the riveting story of the Klan’s rise to power in the 1920s\, the cunning con man who drove that rise\, and the woman who stopped them. \nThe Roaring Twenties–the Jazz Age–has been characterized as a time of Gatsby frivolity. But it was also the height of the uniquely American hate group\, the Ku Klux Klan. Their domain was not the old Confederacy\, but the Heartland and the West. They hated Blacks\, Jews\, Catholics and immigrants in equal measure\, and took radical steps to keep these people from the American promise. And the man who set in motion their takeover of great swaths of America was a charismatic charlatan named D.C. Stephenson. \nStephenson was a magnetic presence whose life story changed with every telling. Within two years of his arrival in Indiana\, he’d become the Grand Dragon of the state and the architect of the strategy that brought the group out of the shadows – their message endorsed from the pulpits of local churches\, spread at family picnics and town celebrations. Judges\, prosecutors\, ministers\, governors and senators across the country all proudly proclaimed their membership. But at the peak of his influence\, it was a seemingly powerless woman – Madge Oberholtzer – who would reveal his secret cruelties\, and whose deathbed testimony finally brought the Klan to their knees. \nA FEVER IN THE HEARTLAND marries a propulsive drama to a powerful and page-turning reckoning with one of the darkest threads in American history.

SUMMARY:Friday Book Club - A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan's Plot to Take Over America\, and the Woman Who Stopped Them
DESCRIPTION:by Timothy Eagan \nRegister for our January Book Club meeting!

SUMMARY:Learn About Ranked Choice Voting from FairVote Illinois
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly Ideas Forum meeting via Zoom. \nThis program will detail the process and benefits of ranked choice voting\, current efforts in Illinois\, and allow time for Q&A. \nRanked choice voting allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference. With ranked choice voting (RCV) candidates must compete to earn the second and third choice votes from their opponents’ supporters\, resulting in more civil campaigns. \n \n  \n  \n  \nFairVote Illinois is a nonpartisan 501(c3) that is made up of volunteers who are supporters of democracy\, who value freedom and fairness in our elections\, and who are passionate about implementing ranked choice voting in Illinois. \n  \nThis event is free\, but please register. \n  \nRebecca Williams lives in Willowbrook\, IL and gets to work full-time on voting reform as the Statewide Organizer for FairVote Illinois.  She started working in political organizing in 2017 and ran the successful ranked choice voting campaign for Evanston last Fall\, making them the first municipality in Illinois to adopt ranked choice voting.  She has a passion for working on nonpartisan policy that brings systemic change.

SUMMARY:How Our State Legislators Get the Work Done
DESCRIPTION:Come to this panel discussion with two of Naperville’s state legislators–Senator Laura Ellman and Representative Janet Yang Rohr. They will discuss how they approach legislative sessions\, sponsorship of bills\, and how they interact with constituents and other legislators during the legislative sessions. \nWe all learned in high school civics how a bill moves through both chambers of the legislature. It is a fairly simple process; each chamber passes the bill and reconvenes together through a special committee if the bills differ. Once the compromise is reached\, the bill is sent to the Governor for signature.  In reality\, the process is more complex\, requiring hours of research\, balancing of interests\, and\, often\, special legislative sessions. \nJoin us! Please register here. \nAbout the Speakers \nSen. Laura Ellman was first elected to the Illinois Senate in 2018.  She currently serves on the following committees:  Agriculture; Appropriations–Finance & Revenue; Energy & Public Utilities; Financial Institutions; Next Generation of Energy; Redistricting–DuPage; Next Generation of Nuclear Energy; and Transportation. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJanet Yang Rohr.  Rep. Yang Rohr was first elected from District 41 to the Illinois House in 2021.  Rep. Yang Rohr serves on the following committees:   Appropriations -Elementary\, Secondary and Higher Education; Elementary & Secondary Education–School Curriculum and Policies and Administration\, Licensing and Charters; Health Care Availability and Access; Personnel & Pensions; and Small Business: Technical Innovation. \n.
