SUMMARY:Civic Awareness Series: Join Jim Slusher from the Daily Herald
DESCRIPTION:Join Jim Slusher from the Daily Herald Editorial Board to discuss election issues that need more discussion.  \nRecently the Daily Herald held a series of editorials focusing on a variety of election issues that have not gotten much attention in the news or\, for that matter\, in public policy discussions in Illinois.  The goal was to spark discussion\, consider how we select candidates and make decisions through the ballot box.  Join in the discussion examining possible reforms that have not been examined closely and perhaps can lead to a restored faith in our elections.   \nAs Assistant Managing Editor for Opinion and Administration\,  Jim Slusher oversees editorial writing\, the selection of syndicated columns and cartoons\, and letters to the editor for the Daily Herald Opinion Page. Working with an editorial board made up of top editors in the Daily Herald newsroom\, he helps shape the newspaper’s voice on subjects of interest to suburban readers while seeking to present an engaging mix of opinions on broad social and political topics along with a forum for local residents to present their views on whatever topics they consider important. \nThis event is part of the Civics Awareness Series sponsored by Cantigny Park and the Leagues of Women Voters of Roselle-Bloomingdale\, Central Kane County\,  Glen Ellyn\, Wheaton\, and Naperville.  \nThe event is free and open to all. Please register. \nYou can submit your questions to ccorrigan@fdmuseum.org or blaimins@gmail.com.  Please use the Q&A button located on the bottom of the Zoom screen when asking questions during the event. \n

SUMMARY:Day of Action: Moore v. Harper Rally
DESCRIPTION:Moore v. Harper: the most important Supreme Court case you have never heard of! \nThis Wednesday\, December 7\, SCOTUS will hear oral arguments in Moore v. Harper\, which concerns the so-called “independent state legislature theory” (ISLT)\, which\, if adopted\, would have far-reaching implications for the future of American democracy. \nLWVUS will be rallying on the SCOTUS steps during oral arguments. \nLocally we will be having a sister rally with other DuPage County Leagues. \nOur speaker will be Sania Irwin\, the national Vice President of the League of Women Voters. \nJoin us on Wednesday to make your voice heard! \nWednesday\, December 7\, 4pm\nDuPage County Courthouse\, 505 North County Farm Road \n“Giving states unchecked power to set rules for federal elections is an assault on the American voter\,” said Virginia Kase Solomón\, CEO of the League of Women Voters of the US. “Historically\, state legislatures have enacted the most harmful and suppressive anti-voter laws\, and pro-voter groups like the League have relied on the ability to fight them in state courts. The Independent State Legislature Theory is a dangerous\, fringe ideology that leaves voters effectively defenseless from harmful election laws.” See less

SUMMARY:Friday Book Group - Bring Home the War: The White Power Movement and Paramilitary American
DESCRIPTION:Bring Home the War: The White Power Movement and Paramilitary American \nBy Kathleen Belew \n  \nFrom goodreads.com: \nIn Bring the War Home\, Kathleen Belew gives us the history of a movement that consolidated in the 1970s and 1980s around a potent sense of betrayal in the Vietnam War and made tragic headlines in Waco and Ruby Ridge and with the Oklahoma City bombing and is resurgent under President Trump. \n  \nBelew’s disturbing and timely history reminds us that war cannot be contained in time and space: grievances intensify and violence becomes a logical course of action. Based on years of deep immersion in previously classified FBI files and on extensive interviews\, Bring the War Home tells the story of American paramilitarism and the birth of the alt-right. \n\nBook Group welcomes LWVN members and nonmembers.
